One of the best ways to experience our nation’s wildlands and waterways is to explore it – and then to cap the experience with a pour of American whiskey. There are more than 88,600 miles in America’s National Trails System, including 11 National Scenic Trails, 19 National Historic Trails, and 1,300 National Recreation Trails. Celebrating each of them with whiskey adds an extra layer of enjoyment to your outdoor adventure. Below are some of our team’s favorite hiking trails in the United States, as well as a few tips on how to enjoy whiskey – responsibly – while you hike them.
Enjoy a Dram of Whiskey Responsibly While You Hike
If you’re bringing whiskey with you to sip riverside or toast at the tip of the summit, here are a few important guidelines:
- The best accompaniment to whiskey is water. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water along with your whiskey to avoid dehydration.
- Check local regulations regarding alcohol consumption in parks and on trails. Some outdoor spaces prohibit alcohol.
- Alcohol hits harder at higher altitudes. Practicing moderation is the best way to keep yourself and others safe.
- Always follow Leave No Trace principles, packing out all trash and avoiding glass containers. Although Fox & Oden bottles are beautiful, opt for a metal shatterproof flask.
