Looking to get into the bourbon world? Or wondering how to drink bourbon? You’ve come to the right place. So much of the process of making a good bourbon hinges on patience. Bourbon making is a years long craft, and not one to be hurried or rushed. Our Fox & Oden Straight Bourbon is a careful blend of 8 to 15 year bourbons, so when we drink bourbon we try to bring the same thoughtful philosophy to that first sip.
Know what you’re drinking
But, just because it’s special, doesn’t mean that bourbon drinking has to be intimidating. Let’s go over some of our basics to help get the most out of your bourbon tasting experience.
Before you even make your first pour, it’s helpful to know what bourbon is and what makes it unique. Bourbon is defined by a very distinct set of six qualifications:
- Bourbon can only be made in the United States of America.
- The mash bill must be at least 51% corn. Our straight bourbon is made of corn and rye mash.
- It must be aged in new, charred oak barrels. In order to be called a “straight” bourbon, it must be aged for at least two years.
- It must be distilled to no more than 80% ABV.
- When bourbon enters the barrel for aging, it must be no more than 62.5% ABV.
- Like other whiskeys, bourbon must be at 40% ABV or more when bottled.
Try it first neat, but adding water and ice isn’t a sin
Seasoned bourbon drinkers often take their drink neat – at room temperature and without ice. This method gives you the purest, unfiltered introduction to all the juice has to offer. If neat is too intense, a splash of water helps cool down the fire and a small amount of dilution can even open up the aromas. The same goes for ice, but make sure to use one large cube over smaller pieces, as it will melt slower and avoid diluting and cooling the bourbon too much, too quickly.
Consider your bourbon glass
Much of the bourbon tasting experience hinges on the aroma of the spirit. You want a glass that helps to open up the flavors. A curved glass with a broad base, like the Glencairn Glass, is a great place to start, as it helps to move the aromas upwards.
Savor
Our number one recommendation of how to drink bourbon is simply to remember that bourbon is an experience to be savored, rather than a means to an end. Take your time with it: examine the color of the liquid, have a sniff, and enjoy it through a series of small sips to help open you up to the multiple flavors and profiles.
Ultimately, the best way to drink bourbon is however you enjoy it. Purchase our spirits at our tasting rooms or a retailer near you. Follow us on Facebook and Instagram to stay up to date on the latest from Fox & Oden. Remember to always enjoy and drink your bourbon responsibly!
